DIE WOLKE AM DACH
1. Preis. Künstlerischer Wettbewerb Neubau Technik- und Laborzentrum Klagenfurt 2008
Über dem begrünten Dach auf dem Bauteil an der Flatschacherstraße schwebt eine sieben Meter lange und dreieinhalb Meter hohe Wolke. In transparenten Kunststoffrohren leuchten vierhundertfünfundfünfzig Leuchtdioden (RGB-LEDs). Die Wolke verändert in einem langsamen Fluss ständig ihre Farbe, wobei in weichen Übergängen das gesamte Farbspektrum des Regenbogens erscheint.
Die Komplexität eines Technik- und Laborzentrums fordert ein verbindendes Element, das alle Bereiche innerhalb des Gebäudes einbezieht und gleichzeitig für ein weithin sichtbares und eindeutig identifizierbares Zeichen in der Landschaft steht. Während in den Labors die Güte des Wassers, der Luft oder der Lebensmittel geprüft wird, schwebt über dem Gebäude eine Wolke, die gleichsam als Trägerin der Ursachen allen Lebens steht. Einerseits ist sie Transportmittel im Kreislauf des Wassers, andererseits ist sie Trägerin poetischer Reflexionen, Visionen und Hoffnungen. Im Kontrast zum technisch faktischen Arbeiten in den Innenräumen stellt die Wolke einen Gefühlswert, eine Stimmung in Form von farbigen Licht über dem Gebäude dar.

A large multicolored cloud (7.0 x 3.5 m) floats above a grass rooftop of a public building. In the 17 polycarbonate tubes (5 cm diameter),
455 Power-RGB-LEDs (light emitting diodes) are placed in aluminum u-profiles (3 x 3 cm), spaced 20 cm apart. Like on a big screen, each LED can
transmit all colors, including white. The LEDs are so strong that their colors can be recognized even in direct sunlight. At night, the light
intensity is reduced. A DMX device controls the color changes of the LEDs. The cloud can continuously change its colors in slow motion, blending
the colors of the rainbow, with either red, blue, green, or yellow dominating at a time or all colors appearing randomly.
The complexity of
tasks in technical and analytical laboratories calls for a unifying element, that integrates all divisions of the building, and at the same time
is a highly visible landmark. While inside the laboratories, the quality of water, air and food is tested, above the building a cloud is floating
carrying these elements of life. On one hand, the cloud is a component of the water cycle, on the other hand, a medium for poetic reflections, visions,
and hopes. In contrast to the technical work inside the building, the cloud emits emotions and feelings, in the form of colored light over the building. Z-Power LEDs are used in the field of architecture and are very economical, using a maximum of 1500 Watts under full load.
